Iceland

Grunnskóli Snæfellsbæjar is a local public school with 270 pupils from 6 - 16 years of age. Our community is situated on the Snæfellsnes penisula on the west coast of Iceland and it has received the environmental certification of Earth Check. The school is a Green Flag school and has been for some years and its theme is integrated in our activities. One of the shool´s subjects is studying regional/local environment. In our community are 1700 inhabitants. Our main industry is fishery.

Our school is situated close to the National park of Snæfellsjökull. We take our pupils there on field trips for Environmental education and to discover the different types of nature. The study of National parks and the importance of preserving the Wildlife in general will be integrated in the curriculum of Grunnskóli Snæfellsbæjar. Field trips as well as studying at school and on the internet will be used to increase the ability of our pupils to understand the importance of preserving and appreciating mother nature. They will also learn about the sagas connected to the national park, its flora and geology. They will also get informations about what is a fundamental elements for the foundations of national parks in general.
The school has good cooperation with the management of the National park. We like to educate our pupils about the importance of such parks  and that the nature has to be preserved for the generations to come. Because of our glacier, Snæfellsjökull, the area is famous worldwide and we would like our pupils to introduce it to the pupils of the other participating schools as well as getting to know it better themselves.
